For nearly two decades, John H. Motley has been synonymous with the nonprofit community in Connecticut. As President of the Travelers Foundation in Hartford, CT, Motley not only provided nonprofits with funds, but also advised them on board recruitment and development, strategic planning, and fundraising. With a career that has spanned philanthropy, education, real estate and insurance, and experience working on a range of nonprofit boards and committees, Motley wanted to have a more direct role in helping nonprofits address their challenges.
Motley envisioned MotleyBeup as an embodiment of his passion to make a difference in education, the arts and organizations devoted to social change. As a partner in the firm, he speaks directly with board members and staff and encourages them to broaden their field of vision beyond what they know is possible. He draws great satisfaction from translating his vision in to an actual plan for helping nonprofits grow and thrive.
With a law degree from DePaul University, Motley joined Travelers as Executive Vice President of its real estate subsidiary. Later he became Chief of Staff of Claims Services before being named president of the Travelers Foundation, a role he credits with introducing him to many of the nonprofits he now interacts with regularly.
A Hartford resident, Motley is the immediate past President of the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art and a corporator of Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and the Hartford Public Library. He is a past president of the Amistad Foundation, the Neighborhoods of Hartford and the Hartford Economic Development Corporations. Motley is the Chairman of the Board of the American Civil War Center in Richmond, Virginia and a Trustee of the Connecticut State University System Board of Trustees.
